Aldi, a discount supermarket chain, said yesterday the company will be shutting its Lorain location at Broadway and 39th Street with the imminent opening of a new Amherst store.

The move likely won't happen until the end of this year or the beginning of next year, the company said. The Amherst store, which will be in Century Plaza at the intersection of Kresge Drive and SR 58, is under construction.
The Lorain location will close, and the Amherst store will open the following day, said Kevin McClure, director of real estate for Aldi Hinckley Division, which covers northern Ohio.
''There won't be a gap,'' he said.
McClure said changes in ''shopping trends'' forced the company's hand regarding the Lorain store.
''We've outlived the space,'' he said.
He said having a store in Lorain and Amherst wouldn't make sense because the stores would be too close together, and the 17,000-square-foot space in Lorain is too small.
''It's an old building,'' he said. ''All the new retail is happening over in Amherst.''
He said the store in Amherst will be in a plaza with other buildings, and the store in Lorain is a stand-alone building.
